Alves had been suffering from a muscle injury, but after training without medical clearance on Saturday and showing no signs of discomfort, the staff had no choice but to allow the Brazilian to feature on Sunday evening.
Alves will join Neymar and Leo Messi in the list, both of whom were expected to be rested after arriving from their extended holiday on Thursday.
The 18-man squad list to face Real Sociedad is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Ter Stegen and Bravo.
Defenders: Montoya, Piqué, Mascherano, Jordi Alba, Dani Alves, Mathieu.
Midfielders: Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Rafinha and Iniesta.
Forwards: Suárez, Messi, Neymar, Pedro and Munir.
Adriano, along with Marc Bartra, Douglas, Sergi Roberto and Jordi Masip were all left off the squad list by technical decision.
